ACTIVITIES
A broad range of activities, open to students of every grade level, provides opportunities for leadership and service. Student Council, language and culture clubs, publications, forensics, chorus, band, and drama, computer, math, and science clubs are representative of the diverse organizations.
VISUAL ARTS
Ursuline's art program is one of its unique strengths. The Art Department firmly believes that all students are artists capable of making significant works of art. Art is required in grades 6, 7, and 8. In 9th grade, students may select Introduction to the Arts, encompassing art and music. Electives in art include Studio Art, Drawing, Painting, Art History, 3-d Design and Mixed Media, Computer Graphic Design, portfolio courses, and AP art.
All art students interact with actual works of art in museums and galleries, and they enjoy virtual museum visits via the Internet.
Every school year culminates with an art show in which all student work is displayed, and in which seniors are given special places to set up one-woman shows. Each year, the administration buys several works of art done by graduating seniors, and the school now has an extensive collection on display. The annual school calendar is also filled with student art.
Clubs such as Art Society and Photography Club afford other vehicles for creative expression.
PERFORMING ARTS
Ursuline has many students who are talented in the fields of singing, music, dance, and acting. The results of hard work throughout the year come alive in the production of three plays, one of them a musical, in addition to musical concerts and dance recitals. Dance Club, Ursuline Singers, Cantors, and Instrumental Group foster student talent. The opening of the Mooney Hancock Arts Center affords state-of-the-art facilities--the Frank J Auriana Theatre, music and dance studios, an orchestra room, as well as four new art studios.
In addition to the Introduction to Art/Music, elective courses in dance, music appreciation, choral, and instrumental are also offered.
PUBLICATIONS
Ursuline offers the opportunity to be involved in the process of creating the school's formal publications. Eidolon, which comes from the Greek word meaning "vision," is the school yearbook. Pegasus, which is published at the end of the school year, is the school's literary magazine that is filled with student stories, poems, artwork, and the like. The Ursuline Unison, which produces four issues during the school year, is the school's newspaper.
CULTURE
Ursuline's ethnic diversity is evident in a wide range of language and culture clubs. Club members may go out to ethnic restaurants, watch movies based on the culture, or put on a performance for the school that reflects an aspect of culture. These clubs, which provide an opportunity for students to learn about a particular culture, enrich the knowledge of their members and the school as a whole. Culture clubs include the following.
- Asian Society
- Black Essence
- Brazilian Culture & Arts
- Caribbean Club
- French Club
- Gaelic Society
- Italian Club
- Spanish Circle
SERVICE
Community service and social action activities are a priority at Ursuline. Community service courses, social action trips during vacation, Senior Make a Difference Day, and a variety of special projects throughout the year at every grade level encourage student service. Students regularly volunteer at New Rochelle's HOPE Community Services; they participate in Habitat for Humanity projects; they go on Midnight Runs. Many do volunteer work at hospitals, nursing homes, and schools. National Honor Society students also sponsor activities for the elderly Ursuline sisters.
SPIRITUAL LIFE
Deeply rooted in the Judeo-Christian tradition, Ursuline emphasizes the spiritual development of its students. In addition to religion classes, a retreat program at all grade levels gives students the opportunity to reflect on their relationship with God and with others. Juniors and seniors trained as Peer Ministers help direct these retreats. School liturgies are celebrated periodically throughout the year for the entire school community, and Masses and prayer services are held regularly in the chapel.
CO-CURRICULAR
These clubs give Ursuline students the chance to interact with other students who have the same interest in a particular subject or issue. Significant achievements of these clubs include the creation of the school's web page by the Computer Club and the many awards, trophies, and titles won by the Forensic Team.

ORGANIZATIONS
Student Council
The Student Council sponsors a number of special projects, for example, to benefit breast cancer awareness and Heifer International. Student Council members also promote school spirit through holiday candy grams and Spirit Week.
National Honor Society, National Junior Honor Society
A significant percentage of Ursuline's student population is involved in these organizations. The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS -- grades eight through ten) and National Honor Society (NHS -- juniors and seniors) consist of students who are selected based on their academic average , leadership, character, and community service work. The NJHS has participated in community activities including collecting toiletries for local churches and "midnight runs" to the homeless. The members of the NHS are also introduced to the older Ursuline sisters. The students keep in touch with and visit these sisters throughout the year.
